Know the pattern
Scams using the MetaMask name
MetaMask will never ask for your Secret Recovery Phrase. No genuine support agent needs it.
Crypto transfers cannot be reversed, which makes crypto the scammer's favourite payment method and target.
Recovery phrase request
Anyone asking for your seed or recovery phrase is stealing your wallet. No exchange, wallet or support agent ever needs it.
Fake support
Scammers watch public posts for complaints and reply as support, then move the conversation to a private chat.
Airdrop or giveaway
Free tokens or double-your-money giveaways that ask you to connect your wallet or send crypto first.

Step by step
How to check a message that claims to be from MetaMask
- 1
Look at the actual sender address, not just the name. Tap or hover over the name to reveal it. It must end in @metamask.io, or a subdomain of one.
- 2
Do not use links or phone numbers from the message. Type metamask.io into your browser or open the official MetaMask app, and check your account there.
- 3
Slow down when you see urgency, small fees, gift cards, crypto, or requests for codes and passwords. Those are the levers every scam pulls.
- 4
Still unsure? Paste the sender address or link into the checker above.
Questions
MetaMask scam FAQ
What email address does MetaMask use?
Genuine MetaMask email comes from addresses ending in @metamask.io, or a subdomain of those (for example something@mail.metamask.io). An address on any other domain, even one containing "metamask", is not MetaMask.
Can scammers fake an @metamask.io email address?
We are running the first check on metamask.io. Until then, assume a sender address alone proves nothing and verify by visiting metamask.io yourself.
Are there websites pretending to be MetaMask?
Our first lookalike scan for MetaMask is queued. Check back shortly.
What should I do if I clicked a link in a fake MetaMask message?
Do not enter anything else. If you typed a password, change it at metamask.io straight away and turn on two-step sign-in. If you entered card or bank details, call your bank using the number on your card. Then report the message using the guide below.
