Official Google domains

google.com

Real Google emails and websites use these domains or a subdomain of them. Anything else, including addresses that contain the Google name, is not Google.

Google also runs free personal mailboxes (gmail.com, googlemail.com). Anyone can create one, so an address there is a member of the public, not Google staff.

Paste the sender's email address, the link, or the website from the message.

Scams using the Google name

Scammers can share real Google Docs, Forms and Drive files, so a notification can genuinely come from google.com while the shared content is a scam. Judge the content, not only the sender.

Account takeover scams want one thing: your password or a sign-in code. Everything else is decoration.

Your account will be disabled

A message says your account will be locked unless you verify it, with a link to a fake sign-in page.

Fake security warning

A pop-up or call says your device is infected and tells you to call support. Genuine system error messages do not ask you to phone anyone.

Storage full or payment failed

You are told your cloud storage is full or your subscription payment failed, with a link to fix it.

From people who received them

Step by step

How to check a message that claims to be from Google

  1. 1

Look at the actual sender address, not just the name. Tap or hover over the name to reveal it. It must end in @google.com, or a subdomain of one.

  2. 2

Do not use links or phone numbers from the message. Type google.com into your browser or open the official Google app, and check your account there.

  3. 3

Slow down when you see urgency, small fees, gift cards, crypto, or requests for codes and passwords. Those are the levers every scam pulls.

  4. 4

Still unsure? Paste the sender address or link into the checker above.

Questions

Google scam FAQ

What email address does Google use?

Genuine Google email comes from addresses ending in @google.com, or a subdomain of those (for example something@mail.google.com). An address on any other domain, even one containing "google", is not Google. Note that anyone can create a free personal mailbox at gmail.com, googlemail.com. Those are customer accounts, not Google staff.

Can scammers fake an @google.com email address?

We are running the first check on google.com. Until then, assume a sender address alone proves nothing and verify by visiting google.com yourself.

Are there websites pretending to be Google?

Our first lookalike scan for Google is queued. Check back shortly.

What should I do if I clicked a link in a fake Google message?

Do not enter anything else. If you typed a password, change it at google.com straight away and turn on two-step sign-in. If you entered card or bank details, call your bank using the number on your card. Then report the message using the guide below.
